Mai Tai – The Ultimate Tropical Drink

Mai Tai - Perfect Drink With An Umbrella

Having a party that involves serving alcoholic drinks? Bets are someone will ask for a Mai Tai.  After all, what's the first thing you think of when you say Mai Tai? Probably beach vacations, tropical tiki bars, and Hawaii. Every bartender knows how to make a Mai Tai -- it's become an iconic tropical drink. But did you know that the Mai Tai wasn’t actually invented in Hawaii or even in Tahiti? It was actually invented in Oakland, California in 1944 by a bartender by the name of Victor Jules “Trader Vic” Bergeron.

Victor was bartending at the restaurant he owned, Trader Vic’s, when he created a new drink for his friends visiting from Tahiti. He combined Jamaican rum, fresh lime juice, orange curacao, Rock Candy Syrup, and French Orgeat Syrup. He then added ice and garnished the drink with a lime and fresh mint. Victor served this special drink to his friends who then took a sip and immediately exclaimed “Maita’i roa ae!” Meaning, “Out of this world! The best!”

It wasn’t until 1953 that the Mai Tai officially made its way to Hawaii and became the popular drink everyone knows of today. It's been made even more famous by appearing in the film ‘Blue Hawaii’ with Elvis Presley -- now the drink has left a lasting impact and become a must-have for island vacationers.

Victor franchised his tropical themed restaurants and opened one in Seattle, Washington, Hawaii and many other locations over the years.  To this day, the legend of ‘Trader Vic’s’ lives on with 27 restaurants still in operation under various names.
