TROPICAL THEMED DECOR

  • Put grass skirts around the tables. This is a bit trickier than it seems. Don't attempt to put the grass skirt on a table linen since it won't stick! Instead, put it directly on the table, bar, etc with clear packing tape.
  • Hang large colorful lanterns from the ceiling. Truly, it's not the easiest task, but the end result looks great.
  • Hang smaller lanterns at surface area levels, for example off of tables and/or a tiki bar.
  • Use fresh tropical fruits for decor. Pineapples, coconuts, and bananas work great and even make fantastic centerpieces when you put them all together.
  • Create an underwater room effect. Fill balloons in various shades of blue with helium. Let them float to the top of the ceiling without strings. Cover the walls with ocean patterned gossamer material.
  • Create sophisticated yet affordable centerpieces. Try using a burlap placemat or fabric on each table. Then layer it with a few banana leaves and some seashells.
  • Create tropical themed signs. Use the same background for tiki bar signs, signature beverage signs, etc.
  • Decorate the walls with fishing nets. Hang these throughout the hallways, over doorways. Attach some seashells and starfish within the nets. You'll most likely need hot glue to make it stick, so this one you have to plan ahead of time.
  • Blow up bright balloons such as pink, blue, orange and yellow. Hang them throughout the room.

TIKI BAR

  • You gotta have a tiki bar! It's the first place people go and the last thing they'll remember. It's a must for any tropical theme party!
  • You'll also want to serve tropical drinks. You could serve a traditional drink like a mai tai or you could come up with a signature drink and give it a special name. Create a sign to promote the drink so people know what it is.
  • Wondering where to get a tiki bar or a cool "tikitender" to do the bartending? That's TikiTreats' specialty. Contact us so we can help make your event in DC, MD or VA a huge success.

ISLAND THEMED ACTIVITIES

  • Limbo contest - always fun! Put on Chubby Checker's Limbo Rock and encourage everybody to "Get Down"!
  • Set up a photobooth- provide themed props like huge sunglasses, coconut bras, straw hats, beachballs, etc. Ask the photobooth business to use a tropical backdrop.
  • Have a table of prizes. Give guests a raffle ticket and have them go around to drop  their raffle ticket in a pineapple cup in front of each prize they'd like to win.

Hope this helps get you start on having a winter theme tropical party. What ideas have worked well for your events?
